Rain Water Harvesting @ 1U

My tour of duty on 19th February 2010 with senior officials of the Ministry  was to look at 1 Utama development projects especially the Rain Water Harvesting, in which 1U had implemented quite some times ago.

I was very impressed by the 30% savings on water bills by using rainwater harvested from their buildings.

Wished more will follow this fine example of saving on use of treated water.

  • Y.B. Dato’ Sri,

It is amazing to know that installation of rain water harvesting system is able to save 30% on water bill. My suggestion for your consideration is to have all Government buildings, especially the new buildings in Putrajaya to install similar system. On the other hand, what would be your opinion (taking into account the economic value) for existing private house owner to retrofit the system in their house?

    Thank you.

  • Dear YB,

WECAM and FOMCA have embarked on similar but simpler version of rainwater harvesting system. the 3 office locations are totally getting free water to flush and clean. the double storey house unit is saving close to 35%. the school system is flcutuating but it is still saving. we will submit and release these findings to assist consumers to adapt to simpler ways. i still remember using rainwater back when i was young, but these practise is reducing as people want faster access. our system is cheap to install, gravity based and in our terms successful.

  • I was researching a rain water harvesting system for my future home when I came across this blog site. I am very surprised that One Utama has a rain water harvesting system that saves as much as 30% of water from its consumption.

It goes without saying that more and more people are beginning to do their part to conserve the environment. To have no clean water to supply in a tropical country like ours is certainly worrying. People should be less selfish and try to look things at the long term in preserving the natural environment for our future generations.

In order to make them realize the impact of their actions, there should be more awareness in society. Private entities such as One Utama should showcase their rainwater harvesting system to the public in order to bring awareness to the public. A successful shopping mall would be the right place to do that where there are many visitors everyday.

A suggestion for the ministry is to show methods for making a simple home rain water harvesting system that is low cost and effective. The impact would be reduced load on our precious groundwater and catchment areas, reduced utility bills and increased public spending at DIY shops (money well spent on boosting our economy instead of wasting taxpayers money to increase capacity at public utilities & future impact to our water sources).
